Biography
Josaphat Kuntsevych (1580-1623) was a Ukrainian Greek Catholic metropolitan and the first martyr of Christian unity. Born into Orthodox nobility, Josaphat entered monastic life and became a staunch advocate for the Union of Brest (1596), which sought to unite Orthodox and Catholic churches while preserving Eastern liturgical traditions. As metropolitan of Polotsk, he worked tirelessly to implement the union despite fierce Orthodox resistance. His reform efforts, including enforcement of clerical celibacy and discipline, generated fierce opposition. Josaphat was martyred in 1623 by an anti-union mob that murdered him with brutal violence. Canonized in 1867, he remains a symbol of ecumenical dialogue and the possibility of Eastern Catholic practice. His witness demonstrates commitment to institutional unity without erasing authentic cultural and liturgical traditions.
