Biography

John I (d. 526 AD) was Pope during a tumultuous period when the Ostrogothic king Theodoric ruled Italy. A Roman of advanced age when elected pope, John attempted to balance faithfulness to the Church with political realities under barbarian rule. Theodoric, though Arian, initially tolerated John's Catholic leadership. However, when the Eastern Roman Emperor Justin I began persecuting Arians, tensions escalated. Theodoric suspected John of divided loyalty and, following a delegation to Constantinople, imprisoned John upon his return. Weakened by harsh imprisonment and torture, John died in captivity around 526 AD. While his death resulted from political intrigue rather than explicit religious persecution, John's steadfast papal authority and imprisonment symbolized the Church's struggle for independence from secular rulers. He is venerated as a martyr for papal integrity, representing the Church's principle that spiritual authority transcends temporal political power.
