Biography

John of Damascus (675-749), called the last Church Father, was a Syrian theologian, philosopher, and poet of extraordinary influence. Born into a prominent Damascene Christian family under Islamic rule, John served as a financial official before entering monastic life at Saint Sabbas monastery near Jerusalem. His comprehensive theological synthesis reconciled Greek philosophy with Christian revelation, profoundly shaping medieval theology. John defended icon veneration during the iconoclastic controversy, arguing that visual images honor the sacred realities they represent without violating monotheism. His Exact Exposition of the Orthodox Faith became foundational theological systematics. Beyond theology, John excelled as a liturgical hymnographer, composing influential canticles and hymns still sung throughout Christendom. His integration of Aristotelian logic with patristic tradition, defense of sacred art, and liturgical contributions secured his position as Christianity's most important eighth-century theologian and a bridge between patristic and medieval thought.
