Biography

Jerome Emiliani (1481-1537) was a Venetian priest who dedicated his life to caring for abandoned children and orphans. Initially a military officer, he experienced a spiritual conversion and entered the priesthood. Witnessing the plight of orphans during his ministry, Jerome founded the Congregation of Somaschi in 1528, devoted to educating and supporting destitute children. He established orphanages and schools, pioneering modern social welfare approaches by emphasizing education, job training, and spiritual formation for vulnerable youth. His methods were revolutionary for their time, treating children with dignity and providing comprehensive support. Jerome personally served the poor and marginalized until his death from plague in 1537 while caring for his community. He was canonized in 1767. His legacy profoundly influenced Catholic charitable work and child welfare, establishing principles that remain foundational to modern social services and youth advocacy.
