Biography

Clare of Assisi (1193-1253) was born into a wealthy Italian family but abandoned her inheritance to follow Francis of Assisi's radical call to evangelical poverty. She founded the Order of Poor Clares, a contemplative community of women dedicated to strict poverty, manual labor, and mystical prayer. Despite her cloistered life, Clare exercised considerable spiritual authority, corresponding with popes and defending her order's commitment to absolute poverty against ecclesiastical pressure to accept property and income. Known for her intense mystical experiences and visions, she reportedly had miraculous encounters with Christ in the Eucharist. Her leadership established the Poor Clares as a major female religious order throughout Christendom. Clare's canonization in 1255 recognized her profound holiness and her pioneering role in creating opportunities for women's spiritual independence and intellectual engagement within the Church.
