Biography
Bede (673-735), an Anglo-Saxon Benedictine monk, was one of medieval Europe's greatest scholars and the first major historian of the English Church. Oblated to Wearmouth monastery as a child, he spent his entire life in monastic communities, becoming profoundly learned in Scripture, theology, and classical texts. His most significant work, the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, established him as the father of English history, providing invaluable accounts of early Christian Britain and Anglo-Saxon missionary efforts. Bede also wrote biblical commentaries, hagiographies, and scientific treatises on timekeeping and Easter calculations. His scholarship helped establish May 25 as the correct date of the Ascension. His methodical approach to historical documentation—citing sources and distinguishing between reliable and uncertain accounts—established standards for historical writing. Declared a Doctor of the Church, Bede exemplified intellectual rigor combined with deep spirituality.
