Biography
Apollinaris was one of the earliest bishops of Ravenna in Italy, traditionally believed to have been appointed by Saint Peter himself. He devoted his episcopacy to spreading Christianity throughout the Ravenna region, performing miracles and converting many pagan inhabitants. Historical sources indicate he endured severe persecution during Roman pagan uprisings, suffering torture and imprisonment for his refusal to abandon the Christian faith. He became known for his extraordinary powers of intercession, particularly for those afflicted with epilepsy and other grievous maladies. Apollinaris is venerated as a martyr, though precise details of his death remain uncertain through historical records. His legacy profoundly influenced the development of Christianity in northern Italy, and his relics were later enshrined in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe near Ravenna, which stands as a testament to his enduring spiritual significance.
