Biography

Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787) was an Italian bishop, theologian, and founder of the Redemptorist congregation dedicated to preaching to the poor and rural populations. Initially trained as a lawyer, he abandoned his legal practice after a professional humiliation led him to seek ordination. Deeply moved by the spiritual neglect of peasants and lower classes, Alphonsus established the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer in 1732 to provide accessible preaching and pastoral care. His prolific theological writings, particularly on moral theology and confession, became enormously influential, earning him declaration as a Doctor of the Church in 1871. Alphonsus emphasized God's mercy over rigor, advocating for a compassionate approach to confession that relieved scrupulous consciences. His devotional works, including writings on Mary's intercession, spread popular piety. He spent his final years in retirement, still actively writing despite blindness and infirmity, leaving a legacy of pastoral care and accessible theology.
